What is POP3?

POP3 (Post Office Protocol, version 3) email is a protocol that allows you to download your messages when you want to, from a mailbox on a mail server to your local machine using an email client (such as Outlook or Eudora).

WebFarm's mail servers support POP3 mail.

The great advantage of POP email as opposed to Web based email is that you can work offline, (i.e. not connected to the Internet) and use the extensive features of POP3 email programs such as MicroSoft Outlook or Eudora.

What is IMAP?

Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) is gradually replacing POP as the main protocol used by email clients in communicating with email servers. Using IMAP an email client program can not only retrieve email but can also manipulate messages stored on the server, without having to actually retrieve the messages. The user can review headers, create or delete folders and messages, and search contents remotely without having to download the mail. The current version is IMAP4.

WebFarm's mail servers support IMAP mail.

What is Webmail?

Webmail is email that can only be checked through a web browser, in the same way as hotmail.com works.

All WebFarm Hosting accounts have a webmail facility which is useful for checking your email when you are away from your main computer, e.g. when you are at an Internet cafe or overseas.

What is Mail Forwarding?

Mail forwarding allows you to set-up email addresses at your new domain name and forward them to existing email accounts.

Example: info@mydomain.co.nz forwards to john.smith@hotmail.com

WebFarm Hosting accounts support Mail Forwarding and offer a facility to set up your own mail forwards through your website control panel.
