What are Virtual Private Servers (VPS)?

Basically a VPS is a server that runs inside another server. Each VPS has the nuts and bolts of a dedicated server but shares the same hardware. Physical servers are divided into blocks of manageable virtual servers, while continuing to provide the scalability and root access that customers appreciate from a dedicated solution and stepping up the reliability from a shared plan. In addition, each VPS is completely (logically) separate from the others so there is no chance that some other VPS user can access your data from their VPS.

Who Uses Virtual Private Servers?

VPS is used by developers and designers who require full access to the operating system and the ability to load any application or programme they require to the server.

Typical uses include:

  • Technical Uses: staging, development and testing
  • Applications: DNS, e-mail, FTP, and backup
  • Hobbyist applications, moderate gaming, and photo galleries
  • Complex websites or higher volume E-commerce sites
  • Processor-intensive applications like serving databases
  • Resellers, Software Developers, Web Developers & Designers

Possibilities are limitless as to what a Virtual Private Server can do for you and your business. Please note that users have to manage their own VPS. VPS is therefore ideally suited for management by software/web developers and power users experienced with hosting.
